Association with excellence

The British Wheelchair Basketball Women’s Premier League is the first women's para-sport professional league in the world.

The Women’s Premier League is home to the world’s best women’s wheelchair basketball players, the introduction of the league – which began its inaugural season in January 2022 – was a game-changing moment for the sport.

The Women’s Premier League teams are East London Phoenix, Cardiff Met Archers, Loughborough Lightning and Worcester Wolves. They contested the first season in 2022, bringing to life the fast-paced drama of this highly compelling team sport to new audiences across the UK and beyond.

This continued into the second season as well, which saw the same format during 2023. Each team play each other three times in the league, with the Premier League finals being held at the 2022 BWB National Championships. The East London Phoenix Wheelchair Basketball team finished second overall in both the league and the play-offs in both of the first two seasons. During the 2024 season, East London Phoenix have finished second in the league, and are hoping to come away with a gold medal when they play the final on 18th May 2024.

The teams (franchises) are linked to four university hubs which are centres of excellence for wheelchair basketball in the UK for both men and women.  These High Performance Partnerships will develop and nurture wheelchair basketball talent, acting as hubs to incubate and develop future elite athletes and increase access to the Paralympic talent pathways across the UK. 

The creation of the Women’s Premier League is integral to British Wheelchair Basketball’s five-year strategy, which set out bold targets of delivering a Professional Domestic League, developing a world- class high-performance system and doubling participation in the sport.

Participation in team sports improves self-esteem, mental discipline and social skills

East London Phoenix  encourage our players to support each other and we celebrate both individual achievements and success as a team.

Although exercise and sport in general can have incredible effects on people’s mental health and wellbeing, research has shown that there are more impactful mental health benefits of team sports.

In addition to wellbeing and the physical benefits of team sports, there are also valuable life skills and lessons young people can learn including manners, respect and boundaries on and off the court; practising persistence, meeting new friends and boosting confidence.

We’d love for you to get involved and see the positive impact wheelchair basketball can have on both our players and getting future players involved in the sport.

The Team

The East London Phoenix Women’s Premier League team is the University of East London’s first sporting franchise in its history. It marks another statement of intent for a programme that over the past decade has come from sporting newcomer, to one of the leading dual career universities in the UK.

The university is a stone’s throw from the centre of London and boasts some of the best indoor facilities in the capital. The home arena “SportsDock” is part of the London 2012 sporting legacy. The team will be playing in the very same place as the US Olympic team trained in 2012, meaning they are in illustrious company for those who have graced the hardwood. SportsDock is already home to the BBL and WBBL London Lions teams making it a top choice for both student and non-student athletes. A highly talented support team and a drive for excellence makes London the destination of choice for aspirational players looking to progress to the next level.

The local community plays a key role in the university’s unique identity and reflects the inclusive and diverse student population. It provides opportunity to many from the local community to further their education, whilst inspiring and raising aspirations of young people through its Sport in Your Futures Programme.

The franchise team will be no different. It will do this by offering opportunities for its players and students to develop skills on and off the court, all possible by being a student led franchise. It’s your opportunity to get involved in the lives of those in the community and help to shape the next generation.

Aspirations

With player numbers and crowd attendances rising, we have ambitious plans to continue to develop and grow. We'd like to use sport to impact the local community getting more people excited about Wheelchair basketball. We'll continue to run our outreach programmes into local schools to give disabled and able-bodied children the chance to play wheelchair basketball. We're a fully inclusive sport and are passionate about raising awareness and making basketball accessible to all.

Naturally, we want to support our sponsors and build them in to our team on a strategic level — allowing all of our partners to benefit from our ever-improving facilities, expanding audience and our community involvement.
