About Our Club

Welcome to Chelmsford Cricket Club. Founded in 1811, we are an amateur cricket club which has been based at our home ground of Chelmer Park, Galleywood since 1972. Prior to this we played at what is now the Cloud FM County Ground and host to professional County side Essex CCC.

One of the joys of our home ground is that we have three pitches in one location, this means that several matches can take place at home each weekend – bringing together several sides and creating a sense of togetherness within the club where everyone knows everyone. When a match finishes, the players will stay to socialise, watch the other games and support their teammates within the club.

We have five Saturday league teams competing in the Hamro Foundation Essex League, a 6th XI friendly side and a Sunday league team that compete in the North Essex Cricket League. As well as this, we boast a large Colts section of around 160 players ranging from the U7s through to the U16s and a women's team and colts section too.

Our strong cricket pathway from Colts through to the senior teams has helped us to produce former professional cricketers Jon Lewis (Essex & Durham), Neil Burns (Essex, Leicestershire & Somerset), as well as current professionals Aaron Beard (Essex) and Sam Cook (Essex & England Lions). England legend and World Cup winner Geoff Hurst was also a Club member in the 1960s! We’ve also had former professional Cricketers Tom Craddock (Essex) and Matt Dixon (Essex, Durham & Perth Scorchers) represent us. Matt Dixon was part of the 2015 Perth Scorchers squad that won the Big Bash Competition in Australia.

We have enjoyed great success over the years, with our senior teams being crowned champions on numerous occasions:

In 1992, 2017 and 2021 our 1st and 2nd XI were both crowned Premier League Champions.

We have also enjoyed great success in our Colts section, winning various leagues and cups throughout the age groups, though the highlights would be in 1981 when our Under 15s were National Champions and in 2004 when our Under 15s and U16s were crowned County Champions and progressed onto the National Competition.

We are proud to have an ever-growing Women's and Girls’ section. Our aim is to provide a safe, fun environment where women and girls, of all ages and abilities, can learn to play cricket, whilst having fun, making friends and keeping fit!

In 2014, Chelmsford CC established a girls’ section, affectionately known as the ‘Willows’ which has grown significantly over the past few years due to increasing successes on the pitch, word-of-mouth, advertising and through excellent links with the Essex CCC’s Women and Girls’ team. Starting off with one Under 11 team who were entered into the Lady Taverner's soft-ball competition, a competition in which they finished runners-up in Essex; the club can now boast almost 70 girls training and playing in 5 teams: Under 9s, 10s, 11s, 13s and 15s. 

Chelmsford Cricket Club is proud to be an inclusive club and we’re passionate about what we do. We enjoy engaging with the local community and we love inviting them to come along and watch some cricket and interact with our members.

History of Our Club

On 3rd September 1811, eleven gentlemen of Chelmsford played eleven gentlemen of Margaretting at cricket as the inaugural cricket match for a Chelmsford team.

Cricket continued to be played in the early part of the 19th Century, but details are obscure. The Essex Chronicle of 30th April 1858 refers to a meeting held at The Grammar School, where the reformation of a cricket club was mooted and agreed. At this meeting it was stated that the previous club had “died a natural death”.

In May 1875, Chelmsford Cricket Club fixtures were printed in the Essex Chronicle. On 21st, 22nd and 23rd June 1875, the Club was expecting to play a 3 day game against “The United South of England” including W G and G F Grace.

Between this date and 1879 something occurred because the Club was reformed in 1879 under the Presidency of Sir J C Hawkins, Bart. The Club played at New Street on the site of the current Marconi factory and was from this time very successful and became outright holders of the Essex Challenge Cup after a hat-trick of wins in 1888, 1889 and 1890. This splendid cup is now presented at the Club Dinner for Outstanding Individual Performance.

In 1921, the Club obtained the tenancy of Sky Blue Field, land beside the River Can in New Writtle Street. Sheer hard work transformed the area into a cricket ground, the Club’s home for forty nine happy years. The 1960s saw a change in fortune with the disastrous fire in 1963 which destroyed the old pavilion and with it, valuable records and photographs. Later in the decade the ground was sold to the County Club and it became increasingly difficult to fulfil fixtures.

This led directly to the move to Chelmer Park in 1971, to the new sports ground developed by Chelmsford Borough Council. Soon after this the Club assisted in the formation of the Essex League, which was first won by the Club in 1975.

The Colts section was founded in the 1970s and has gone from strength to strength. Many players from the Club have played for Essex County Cricket Club, including Neil Burns, Mickey Bear, JJB Lewis (formerly Captain of Durham), Roger Luckin, Don Spencer and Brian Ward. Also, Aaron Beard & Sam Cook came through our Colts and continue to play County Cricket for Essex, Sam has progressed onto represent England Lions as well as star the in ECB Hundred competition. 

Aspirations

With membership and crowd attendances rising, we have ambitious plans to continue to develop the infrastructure at the club and grow our teams.

Our current ambitions are to continue winning trophies at senior level whilst maintaining our hard work to enable children of all ages and abilities to play cricket where they can learn teamwork, responsibility, social skills and feel valued as members of our club.

Naturally, we want to support our sponsors and build them in to our club on a strategic level – allowing all of our partners to benefit from our ever-improving facilities, expanding audience and our community involvement.
