About Us

Masters hockey for ages over 35 to 70 (women) and even over 80 for the men, grouped in 5 year age group brackets. It is governed under the FIH (Federation of International Hockey) and so is fully recognised as International Level hockey. Players receive recorded caps for representing their country.

Masters Hockey is a rapidly growing sport. There are now eight regions across England that have Masters teams across multiple age groups for both men and women. The teams play against each other in a Cup Competition format but also come together every year over a three-day weekend and have a tournament to declare an overall winning region. Individual players are then eligible to trial for the National Team in their respective age group.

The O50 Women are a self-funded team operating under England Hockey that participate in the International Masters competitions. This year we are working towards defending our 4 Nations title and the defence of our World Cup title at the World Cup tournament in November 2024 in Auckland NZ. We will begin trialling a team in October 2023. Each year we have over 50 players who trial for the team. 18 are selected and between 4 to 6 non-travelling reserves who continue to train in case of injuries. But across the country there are over 400 players per age group that regularly play in their local club or regional section teams.

Although we operate under England Hockey, Masters Hockey is completely self-funded with the exception of sponsorships and fundraising. This year, the players are looking at a cost of approximately £5000 each. These are essential costs, such as travelling to regular training days, pitch hire, personal kit (sticks, shoes, protection), sports massages, England playing kit (on and off field), flights, accommodation, meals, insurance and competition entry.

We are open to any form of support whether that be training pitches, training equipment, GPS/statistics/video analysis equipment/subscriptions, first aid supplies, prizes for fundraising events and we hope to receive donations of bigger prizes that we can use in an online raffle – but most importantly, we’re looking for financial support that will cover our individual and team costs.

In return, we can offer social media advertising. We are not allowed to print logos on the official England match kit but we can produce off-pitch England warm up shirts, caps, banners and so forth with logos attached. Also at previous competitions, matches have been live streamed so we hope this will be the case again next year.

Past Achievements

This age group are currently the Triple Crown Champions.  They are the World Cup Champions, following a successful tournament last year in Cape Town, SA. They are 4 Nations Champions, confidently beating Scotland, Wales and Ireland in Glasgow, Scotland earlier this year. And most recently they became European Champions by overcoming the best that Europe could throw at us – including a victory over the Netherlands in the final. It has been seven years since this age group last won the European title. It came after a lot of hard work and dedication from the players and the coaching team.

We are very fortunate that our Lead Coach is ex-GB Hockey and Olympic medallist Lisa Prince (nee' Bayliss). Her hockey knowledge and also her experience of managing and achieving at high level international competitions has been invaluable to our success.

Aspirations

Our primary directive is to form the strongest team possible in order to defend our 4 Nations title, July 2024,  and our World Cup title at the World Cup tournament in November 2024 in Auckland NZ and come home with more medals!  We are very keen to not let economic factors prevent the best players from representing their country and assisting the team towards this Gold Medal ambition.

We are also keen to continue to grow the Masters platform; provide training, match opportunities and health & fitness sessions that encouraged enable all players, not just in the O50 category, so that Masters players can continue to play hockey at the highest level for as long as possible and we're only able to do this with your support and funding.

Looking ahead to future cycles, we are keen to continue our success at the European Championships and with further support the age group would like to take our medal winning ability and challenge the rest of the world at the Indoor Hockey competitions as well.

Naturally, we want to support our sponsors and build them in to our team and aspirations on a strategic level — allowing all of our partners to benefit from our promotional opportunities and ever-expanding audience.
