History of Our Club

Keynsham Rugby Club 100 Years of Community Rugby

Since its formation in 1923, Keynsham RFC has been a community rugby club, long before the term was popularised by the administrators in Twickenham. In the last 100 years, Keynsham itself has grown from a large village to a town of approximately 20,000 people and its rugby club has also enlarged, reflecting the many changes in local culture and society.

World War II, the subsequent construction of rugby playing fields in the town and the building of a large private and local authority housing estates have all impacted on a club that has needed increasingly sophisticated management. As the clubs has grown, it has needed to employ some staff and external companies to help manage the pitches, but the heartbeat remains the dedicated core of volunteers who have served the club well for over a century.

The  playing side has had to cope with the introduction of leagues in 1987, the onset of professionalism in 1995 and the widening range of alternative hobbies for young people. Furthermore, the increase in work commitments and changes in the nature of family life have adversely affected numbers in the sport. The club has done well to ride out the storm. A keen focus on youth rugby has enabled our player pool to be constantly replenished by the highly successful minis, juniors and colts sections and which enjoys fantastic numbers across all age groups from under 6 to under 18s and for our 1st VX to play at level six in the RFU hierarchy, whilst remaining amateur is no mean achievement and something we are rightly very proud of.

If you really want to know how the community aspect has moved with the times, remember that in 1960 women were only welcomed in the club to prepare refreshments and now we are moving forward with a highly qualified dynamic female head coach and a girls team that are helping us take our club forward and forge more links with our Town and the Rugby community.

Aspirations

With membership and crowd attendances rising, we have ambitious plans to continue to develop the infrastructure at the club and grow our teams.

Naturally, we want to support our sponsors and build them in to our club on a strategic level — allowing all of our partners to benefit from our ever-improving facilities, expanding audience and our community involvement.
