Association with excellence, creating future leaders in sport and life
We develop pathways for players – from grassroots rugby to the world series and the Olympics.
Our aim is to produce the next generation of creative, adaptable, resilient and highly skilled players, equipped with the knowledge and understanding to excel in both the game and endeavours that fall outside of it. Whether that be playing for their club, joining our Senior teams on tour, representing their country in the World Series or going onto further education and their future careers.
UR7s has worked with talented players of all ages since starting the program in 2013, with a large number of boys going on to play age-grade international rugby, professionally contracted, top-level university and international 7s.
We run our own Men’s and Women’s senior touring teams to offer senior rugby experience to selected Academy players we believe can make the step up.
Some of our Academy graduates include Will Wilson, Fergus Guiry, Harry Randall, Ollie Hassel Collins, Tom Mitchell and Matt Jackson.

About Us
Ultimate Rugby Sevens is the leading global online platform for rugby 7s across the world with around 150,000 followers across our physical and digital platforms. We are the most comprehensive source of news, interviews, clips and special videos from the world of rugby 7s whilst delivering our Academies across the far-flung corners of the globe including Africa, North America and Asia.
The National Sevens Academy is the UK’s first and most advanced grassroots rugby sevens performance programme which is dedicated to developing young, talented girls and boys from diverse backgrounds from the ‘Grottos to the Chateaus’ and allowing them to benefit from our renowned rugby family to become more skilled rugby players or just better people.
In 2013, we launched the UR7s National Sevens Academy. Over the last 7 years it has become the most developed rugby 7s performance pathway for young boys and girls in the UK. UR7s is split into three regions – South East, South West and North and operates all year round.
Our ambition is to continue to enhance what we can offer young players so that we build a truly holistic environment for high performance that develops adaptable young people with the tools for life on and off the field. Our philosophy has always been to use world class coaching, delivered by role models within the game, and to embed learning through play.
Our UR7s National Sevens Academy works with internationally acclaimed coaches as we strive to develop high performance in all walks of life using rugby sevens as the vehicle. By giving young players a unique insight into the game of 7s we’re providing the knowledge and understanding of what it takes to play 7s at the highest level. The skills are transferrable to the 15-a-side game and to players off all sizes, positions and ages.
Players are invited to join the Academy through our annual scouting programme, which observes the countries best young players at school and club tournaments, as well as our Talent Development Days (TDDs) that we run at schools across the country. The programme is built on creativity and fun, giving all involved the opportunity to express themselves in an environment that nurtures their talent.

National tournament structure from grassroots to elite level rugby 7s in the UK. The most recognised 7s tournament format in the country offering opportunities to play from all backgrounds.
Developing high performance is not just about what takes place on the field but also what young players experience off the field. With that in mind, we have also developed a series of online sessions that complement the Academy season and provide players with education on topics including nutrition, strength and conditioning, mindset, mental well-being, managing life as a rugby player and more.
Our Academy is the most advanced grassroots rugby sevens programme in the world, created to develop high performance in every walk of life using sevens as the vehicle and provide a pathway from grassroot sport through to the Olympics. We’re proud to announce that we now also run a Girls Academy which officially launched in August 2021.
During the summer residential we balance the on-field sessions with class-based learning, using the experience within our coaching team as well as bringing in experts from outside the Academy. Topics are tailored to the age-groups to ensure the information is relevant to the players at their stage of development.
We also run a mentoring programme which is designed to give each player the opportunity to receive one-to-one time with a member of the UR7s team. Players are asked to complete a self-assessment to reflect on what they have achieved and what they need to work on. The UR7s team will then work with them to set SMART goals for the season.
A new feature of our Academy season is a series of online sessions focused on preparing the Academy players for the sevens season. Our elite coaches and ambassadors join to give insight into a variety of topics. We keep the delivery varied with ‘cook-alongs’, live mobility and conditioning classes as well as the more traditional webinar formats.
UR7s is a leading provider of youth sevens competitions in the UK. This year we have over 200 male and female teams expected to take part across the U13-U18 age groups.
We also run talent development days which provide access to those less fortunate across the country to be educated and scouted to experience our rugby family. Here we run school and club rugby 7s coaching sessions with over 120 schools and clubs from across the UK.
The UR7s Rangers and UR7s Wanderers
UR7s delivers a pathway all the way from community playing opportunities through our Academies and development squads to professional level. The UR7s Rangers were set up to bridge the gap between junior and adult rugby. The squad is selected from members of the Senior Academy section along with academy graduates and some of our core group of coaches. The Rangers tour domestically and give valuable experience to players wanting to take the next step into adult sevens.
The UR7s Wanderers first toured New York in 2008, winning the competition that year. Since then, they have toured all over the world, often following the World Series where invitational tournaments are available. The Wandies pink and blue strip is the highest level of accomplishment for any Academy graduate level of accomplishment for any Academy graduate.
History of Ultimate Rugby Sevens
The founders of Ultimate Rugby Sevens wanted to create a unique forum for the world to experience all things sevens. The ambition however, was always to go deeper and create a vehicle to develop the next generation of young sevens players up to the World Series and more recently, the Olympics.
Under the leadership of Tom Burwell (co-founder) the National Sevens Academy was launched in 2013 and was the first of its kind in the UK. The Academy is now established as the most advanced performance Academy in the UK for the Olympic sport of rugby sevens.
Over the years the National Sevens Academy has advanced the environment it offers young players, expanding our pool of international players and coaches, partnering with some of the best in the business for technology and strength and conditioning, as well as developing our off-field education and support.
Aspirations
With interest in sevens rapidly increasing, we have ambitious plans to continue to develop the infrastructure of what we do and grow our Academies and audience globally.
Naturally, we want to support our sponsors and build them in to our business on a strategic level — allowing all of our partners to benefit from our ever-improving facilities, expanding audience and our community involvement.
